St. Lucia is in the eastern Caribbean Sea about 21 miles south of Martinique and 26 miles northeast of St. Vincent. It is part of the Windward Islands, a sourthern group of the Lesser Antilles int the West Indies. It lies south of Dominica and 90 miles northwest of Barbados.
St. Lucia is a natural wonderland of lush, mountainous topography. It covers 238 square miles (616 sq. km) in the Windward Islands. The island is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. There are 98 miles (158 km) of coastline that features numerous sandy beaches. The island features dense tropical forests, the towering peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, a volcano, sulfur springs, mineral baths and secluded beaches.
The climate is mild with almost constant northeast trade winds and a mean temperature of 28c (82 f).
